World Water Day: Thirsty Cities


Addressing the growing need for water in cities is one of the most pressing challenges of this century.

Half of the population population live in urban environments and it is estimated that within two decades, rising to almost 60% of the population, or 5 billion people.

This means you will need a huge amount of water for human consumption, sanitation, industry and food production.

Only by ensuring access to drinking water supplies of cities of the future will be truly sustainable.

World Water Day this year, on Tuesday, March 22 , IUCN joins the international community to highlight the 2011 theme "Water for Cities: Responding to the urban challenge. "
